One of the sobering characteristics of leadership is that God expects more of leaders than followers.
Leaders like to think they are a tough breed. Every once in a while you will see a sign like this on a leader’s desk: Lead, follow, or get out of the way.
There’s no question that it takes a special person with unique qualities to be a leader, but here’s a fact that should make every leader–especially leaders who are Christians–sit up and take notice. God notices leaders, God watches leaders, and God expects a lot out of leaders.
The reason, we suspect, is that leaders are more responsible for others than followers are. A teacher is responsible to God for his students, a CEO is responsible for her employees, a pastor is responsible for his congregations, and parents are responsible for their children. We’re not saying that followers don’t have responsibilities, too, but leaders have a greater responsibility to demonstrate wisdom, respect and integrity.
“Much is required from those to whom much is given, and much more is required from those to whom much more is given.” Luke 12:48
