How Can I Gain Courage?

Question: I have had an ongoing issue with being very shy around people I do not already know. I’ve always been like this. It has held me back from doing a lot of things that I would of liked to do or thought of doing, and I feel very uncomfortable when put in situations where I do not know anyone or am unfamiliar with my surroundings. I know this is a silly sort of question but I doubt that God wants something such as being shy to hold me back from doing things or experiencing things. It is hard for me just to go to church by myself. As a result, I don’t really have many Christian friends. Do you have any suggestions for me so I can gain some courage?

  1. Being shy is nothing to be embarrassed about. In fact, it can be a very endearing quality. Shy people balance out the loud and overbearing people! We can understand your concern about not doing or experiencing things, but we would encourage you not to worry that you are missing out on stuff. It isn’t necessarily a good thing to want to experience all kinds of new stuff. In fact, that’s how a lot of people get into trouble. At the same time, you don’t want your shyness to prevent you from interacting with others, especially other Christians, who can help you grow in your faith. We would encourage you to begin resting in the power of the Holy Spirit. Instead of drawing upon your own strength to give you courage, ask the Lord to give you courage through His indwelling Spirit. You can’t do it in your own strength, but in God’s strength, all things are possible. Here are some verses to remind you of this:

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7).

For I can do everything with the help of Christ who gives my the strength I need (Philippians 4:13).

  2. Hi! I like your srticle and I would like very much to read some more information on this issue. Will you post some more?
