Should Churches help their members financially?

Situation: I have been off work for three months. I have started a new job, but I don’t get paid for two weeks. My rent is due next week and I am a $300.00 short. If I don’t pay my rent by Tuesday I will be charged a $100.00 late fee and a daily charge each day it is late; by the time I get paid I will owe an extra $500.00. Last week I asked my pastor if the church could help me out. He gave me application to fill out; I fill it out and turned it back in the same day. Today I asked if they were going to be able to here and I was told they were still processing my application.

Question: Is this right? They asked us for money every Sunday, tithes, offerings, building fund, pastor’s anniversary, etc…. Should we have the church to fill out an application before we give?

  1. This is one area within the Body of Christ that breaks my heart to see one of many disregards for biblical truth. Angela, you are so true we continue in lack because of disobedience, nevertheless it’s not because of those who give or don’t give; but those who harbor what is given. To answer the question: Should churches help their members financially? We need to understand the Church, and I am sure we would all agree that it is not the building, but the many members who represent the Body of Christ. For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12 (NKJV) We as Christians have so erroneously disassociated the Body from the church. For the majority of Christians when we hear the word church (which one you go to?) we immediately associate becomes disproportioned would you not pay to have it made whole?

I think, maybe I am wrong, (if the bible is right I don’t think so!) we should be seeking the Word of God for guidance in such matters. For us to understand we need to look at, as my brother Richard called it the principle that Jesus used to met the need in the book of Acts. We need to look at the foundation that Jesus gave instructions for His apostles to lie.

All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Acts 2:44-45 (NIV) The one whom Jesus told upon this rock I will build my church Matthew 16:18 begin to take the money that was being given to anyone who had need. Also in Acts 4:32-37 they distributed as ANYONE had need. The apostles being filled with and lead by the Holy Spirit didn’t want the newly converted to become discouraged in financial matters as they were being taught. One of Satan’s most useful weapons is to distract people in their livelihood.

I am not advocating that money should be just given to people ignorantly. We should be lenders and not borrowers. For the Lord your God will bless you just as He promised you; you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow; you shall reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over you.Deuteronomy 15:6 (NKJV) One of the problem with the institutionalized church is, it teach doctrine and not the WORD! We want to teach and be all holy, but being holy is also being a good steward. Most of us coming into the body of Christ have not been taught how to be wise stewards, including the leaders. And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? Luke 12:42 (KJV) Churches should not only be helping people to grow spiritually, but as good stewards as well. In the process many may have to be pulled out of their financial mishaps by the body and taught the error of their ways.

Yes, I truly believe if you give a man a fish you feed him for a day, but if you teach him how to fish you will feed him for a lifetime. However, teach a man the biblical principles of steward not only will he be feed for a lifetime, but he will give for a lifetime.

I have searched the Word of God closely and nowhere do I find it biblical the way funds are use within the institutionalized church. In Acts 2:41 when the three thousand souls were added to them, they didn’t do what we would do today (BUILD A MEGA BUILDING) continue reading a see what they did. Men today have left the biblical truths in which the foundation was laid. Christianity is simple study it, live it!

    • Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Another way of placing it, Practice carrying each other’s burdens. In this way you will fulfill the law of the Messiah. Romans 15:1 Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength and not just please ourselves.
