Humility is like underwear–you should have it, but you shouldn’t be proud of it.
Humility is subtle. The moment you think you have it, you’ve lost it. Humility is not something you can strive for. It comes by learning to be submissive. One of the most difficult things for a proud person to do is to submit to someone else. But submission isn’t difficult for someone who is humble.
God wants you to be humble. A spirit of arrogance is at odds with godly living. You can move toward humility if you remain submissive to God’s leading. Don’t try to assert yourself against His will. If you need a picture of humility, think of Christ. He humbled Himself by leaving heaven to come to Earth for your sake. It was a supreme act of humility for Him to take on human form when he was God’s own Son.
There is another subtlety about humility. If you are humble before God, He will honor you.
“God sets himself against the proud, but he shows favor to the humble.” So humble youselves under the mighty power of God, and in his good time he will honor you. 1 Peter 5:5-6
